The Blue, Green Creature from Osaka
It doesn't take very long to get a first impression of Chikorita, and it's usually unfavorable. She's uppity, insulting, abusive, confrontational, demanding, both jealous and envious, lacks empathy, self absorbed... and this is on her high days. On her low days, sadly, we see a much truer Chikorita who's lonely, depressed, anxious and has an overall negative opinion of herself due to her low self esteem. In fact, with Chikorita, it's a vicious cycle. She feels like everyone hates her, and doesn't allow people to get close to her. Therefore, she considers everything to be a personal attack and lashes out, creating distance and animosity until people really do hate her, leading back to Chikorita feeling like everyone hates her. One of the problems stems from the fact that she always compares herself to other people, which causes her to feel worthless in comparison, so she overcompensates by acting like she's superior to everyone and putting those down that she's actually afraid of. The other problem is that she just doesn't seem to love herself. She always seeks validation from others, but can't seem to validate herself. She never seems to be happy, and when she is, it's fleeting. More often than not, despite beating herself up, she blames everyone and everything else for what's "wrong" with her life.
Chikorita was very hard to get along with at first. She told Kine she was doing him a favor by following him on his adventure, but in all honesty she was just tired of the life she was living, believing that perhaps relocating would be the answer to her problems, not quite realizing that she was the source of all her problems. Kine's kindness, generosity and overall competence combined with his faith in Chikorita as a trained Pokemon and devotion to her became not only the source of Chikorita's respect for Kine, but the crush that she would have on him for seemingly being the only one who cares about her. Her crush on Kine was known to everyone else but Kine himself and Miltank at first, who would soon become her rival in this unwanted love triangle. Others acknowledged that Chikorita was at the least cute, and really pleasant when she was around Kine, so they tried to hook her up with him in an attempt to help her find some happiness. Nidorina, however, knew that Chikorita wouldn't find happiness just from being with Kine if she doesn't find happiness being with herself. For a short while, Kine and Chikorita started dating. Kine was overtaken by mixed up feelings once Chikorita finally confessed to him and even kissed him, and in not really knowing what else to do, he agreed to becoming Chikorita's boyfriend (which of course she would take every opportunity to brag about from that point on). During this time Chikorita generally became more pleasant overall to everyone else's relief, and she stopped being antagonistic. Miltank would reluctantly admit defeat, but would still try to move in on Kine when Chikorita wasn't anywhere to be seen. Kine, on the other hand, despite his own admission that Chikorita is very cute, never had any romantic feelings towards Chikorita, and only kept up the charade because it made Chikorita happy. However, the idea of being in a relationship at the current stage in his life makes him uneasy, and he was always visibly uncomfortable when going out on dates with Chikorita. It wouldn't be too long before Kine breaks off the whole thing, telling Chikorita that he's not ready for a relationship yet, and that he doesn't want to keep stringing her along on something that isn't very mutual. Chikorita takes this surprisingly well, and over the course of their brief relationship has become slightly more confident and far less antagonistic, but still regressed back to a negative self opinion overall. On the upside, she is now a lot more willing to listen to other's advice, and is trying to better herself.
The only other person she was able to get along with fairly early was Sentret, as Sentret's indifference to Chikorita's self aggrandizing and aloofness (likely due to his low opinion of girls overall) made him both unbreakable and pretty cool, at least in the eyes of Chikorita. He would become her right hand man in her campaign to become Princess Chikorita, one of her more annoying moments of self importance. In time, Chikorita would become very close with Vulpix. As with everyone else, Chikorita started off demeaning Vulpix and making herself seem larger-than-life around her, but Vulpix continued to be friendly and show kindness towards Chikorita anyway. In truth, Chikorita really appreciated this, but having to keep up appearances, decided that it would be okay if Vulpix tagged along with her. For now. If she wanted. But Chikorita still calls all the shots! Their friendship blossomed, even if Chikorita was at times abusive towards Vulpix. In enough time, Chikorita would truly begin to value this friendship, and would actually show deep remorse for hurting Vulpix in any way unintentionally (though she isn't above teasing her at times). At this point in their friendship, Chikorita will do anything to keep it, and is afraid of losing it, as Vulpix is the closest, most understanding friend she's ever had, even if Vulpix doesn't quite understand the emotional storm of an adolescent coming of age.
Nidorino and Nidorina took some time for Chikorita to grow on, but she values them both as elder siblings, currently. She felt that Nidorino was too much of a buffoon to take seriously, but appreciated the fact that he would spend time with her on his own accord, and would allow her to vent her frustrations as Nidorino remained nonjudgmental and empathetic. Chikorita felt threatened by Nidorina initially, and saw her as someone who made her feel very inadequate. With that, Chikorita always tried to take Nidorina down, or was very snippy with her or always had some sort of side comment. However, she longed for the kind of admiration and love that Nidorina would get, which just made her feel worse about herself. Nidorina made efforts to "extend the olive branch" to Chikorita through being a reliable, caring big sister who could impart a lot of wisdom to her. Additionally, Nidorina is the only one who seems to be able to call out and talk frankly to Chikorita in regards to her low self esteem, as opposed to merely ignoring the elephant in the room. Given this opportunity, she is able to reach Chikorita in a way no one else can, which made Chikorita feel like Nidorina was someone she could truly put her trust in. Nidorina seems to speak a truth that touches Chikorita's very soul, and because Chikorita feels so lost in the world and within herself, she looks to Nidorina for guidance and sees her as both a light in the darkness, and a source of stability. In fact, after breaking up with Kine, Chikorita seems to spend most of her time with Nidorina instead, hoping that she'll help her become a better person. She has also come to genuinely love Nidorina like a sister, even if sheepishly, and perhaps feels a bit like she isn't quite worthy of her kindness.
As for Miltank, well, Chikorita typically isn't civil with Miltank.
